2024 marked a major step forward for the VBU franchise. Starting off with the hiring of first-year head coach Chris Mills. Mills brought along 12 years of experience coaching at the Virginia Wesleyan Men’s soccer program. Quickly VBU got to work building their roster, with several familiar faces from the 2023 season, as well as some additional local talent to create an impressive USL 2 squad. “I think we have within our group, every single youth club in the area, our guys have been a part of at some point in their journey.” Mills quoted, “They developed here.”
VB United would look to put their talent up against one of the most difficult divisions in all of USL 2. In 12 league games, VBU would put up an impressive 9-2-1 record, including a record 11-straight games unbeaten. A truly astonishing feat where the team put up the highest goal differential in the division, and ultimately secure their first-ever playoff berth in franchise history. VBU defended their home turf in a 2-1 victory against the SC United Bantams before ultimately losing in penalty kicks to Salem City FC in the next round. An unfortunate end to an extraordinary season but there were several positive takeaways from such a hard-fought year.
United saw a record level of attendance throughout the season, with the largest being their June 22 matchup against the DC United U-23. It would be the first time the DC United franchise set foot in Virginia Beach in over 20 years. The match itself saw a massive turnout with over 2,000 fans in attendance. A major accomplishment for the club that would only continue through the remainder of the year.
Now reflecting on what 2024 has brought, VBU is looking to make an even bigger jump in 2025 and make a run not only at a division title, but the league as a whole. Pro soccer belongs in Virginia Beach and now is your chance as fans, to take part.
